Letter and drawing from Rihanah, a sponsored child from Uganda

Children in Holt’s child sponsorship program love to write letters and draw pictures for their sponsors in the U.S. Here’s what one little girl from Uganda had to say.

Rihanah is an 8-year-old girl who lives with her mother, a peasant farmer, in rural Uganda. She is one of four children. Her mother is able to provide food, shelter and protection for her children, but she is unable to pay for their education.

Rihanah’s dream is to attend school — and she is now able to do so! Thanks to support from her Holt sponsor, Rihanah is provided with school materials, a school uniform and nutritious snacks to fuel her day.

Earlier this year, Rihanah completed the top class at her nursery school, and she is now enrolled in the primary section. She loves to study and learn new things, and particularly loves her music and drama classes. When she’s not in school, Rihanah helps her mother in the garden, harvesting food and picking coffee beans. She also loves to play with her dolls and participate in ball games with her friends and siblings. She is a very friendly and playful little girl!

Here is what Rihanah wrote to her sponsor in a recent letter:

“My sponsor, I am so grateful for the support you render to me every year. Thank you for my New Year’s card. My name is Rihanah and I am in primary one. My teacher is Madam Gertrude. I stay with my parents and I like drawing pictures like hut. Thank you for the love and support. My family in Uganda greets you.”

We visited Rihanah in 2022 and she sang a special song for her sponsor…
