How Holt donors like you helped provide medical care and a safer, healthier home for one child and her family in China.
When Holt staff in China first visited Tao’s family, their house was a mess. There were food wrappers everywhere, chipping paint, and the floor looked like it hadn’t been swept in months.
Seven-year-old Tao and her siblings appeared no better. They wore dirty clothes, and apparently never bathed or brushed their teeth. They got sick all the time.
They sat in front of the TV — despondent. Tao had an un-repaired tongue-tie and couldn’t speak well. Helping Tao and her family wouldn’t be a quick fix.
But through the help of Holt’s staff in China — and the generosity of Holt donors — their transformation was incredible.
Tao’s mother has a mental illness, and her father didn’t know where to start to help their family. But they needed a healthier home, a fresh start — and some compassion.
“When we saw the children again, their eyes were bright and they smiled from their hearts.”
“The next day,” a Holt China staff member says, “we led volunteers to clean their home, including painting the walls, changing the lights, and changing the doors. We did personal cleaning for the children.”
They enrolled Tao and her sister in Holt’s donor-supported program to help cover their basic needs. Next, they called the local hospital and made an appointment for Tao to have her tongue-tie repaired — which will then allow her to begin speech therapy.
Just 10 days later, the change in their lives was amazing. “When we saw the children again,” our staff shares, “their eyes were bright and they smiled from their hearts.”
They encouraged Tao’s father, training him on proper hygiene for his children and the household.
Several months later, their home was still clean, everyone was in better spirits and they all had been in good health — amazing!
So much better than before!
