Last Year’s “Happy Birthday” to Children in Vietnam

In an update report to Holt sponsors and donors, Holt’s program director, Hang Dam, shares about last year’s International Day of the Child birthday celebration for children in Vietnam.

Dear Holt Sponsors and Donors,

On the behalf of children at a daycare facility in Yen Bai province, we would like to express our deepest appreciation for your generous support to bring in a day full of happiness and joy for the kids on International Children’s Day 2020.

After staying home for three months due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the schools reopened in early May. All of the kids were excited to go to back to school where they found it to be safe and lots of fun.

Children loved performing for their parents and special guests!

With your kind donation, we collaborated with the school to organize a party time full of fun for the kids on International Children Day on June 1, 2020.  Some local officials, teachers, Holt staff, volunteers and parents also came to join the activities with the kids. Kids performed a number of songs and dances themselves that were very fun and impressive. All kids enjoyed and received sweet treats and a small gift bag to bring home. We also filled in the ball house with colorful balls for kids to play with. Next year we hope to fill it with even more balls!

This party is so important to these children, especially this year — but you do so much to help these children all year round!

Yen Bai province.

This daycare is located in a rural area of Yen Bai province where most residents are part of minority ethnicities, with Hmong being the biggest ethnic minority group. Children are living in poor conditions and many suffer from malnutrition. Holt brought in nutrition screening services to kids at the daycare in September 2019. During the first nutrition screening, nearly 30 percent of kids were identified with anemia and malnutrition. After the screening, we provided the anemic kids with a supplement for intervention. The kids responded well to the treatment given, and now only 2 percent still have anemia! We also discussed with the school about revising their nutrition plan and adding in more nutritious snacks for kids. As a response, kids have been gaining weight and height.

Your generous donation has been so meaningful, bringing happy moments for the young kids and warm feelings in their heart.

All of the children received a special gift bag full of presents!

Your love and care for vulnerable children in Vietnam is such as special gift for the children, and for all of us who are lucky enough to be the bridge between you and the children at this daycare.

Once more, thank you very much for your generous and warm-hearted care for these lovely children. We wish you health, happiness and success!

Sincerely,

Hang Dam | Program Director – Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines & South Africa
