“Happy Birthday” Around the World

On International Children’s Day this year, more than 3,000 children around the world participated in a huge birthday party, thanks to their sponsors!

A child growing up in an orphanage or in poverty rarely gets to go to a birthday party – much less have one of their own! That’s why every year, Holt sponsors give children in Holt’s programs a big birthday celebration, complete with a party, special meal, fun outing or games, and a special present just for them!

Here are some reports from Holt’s 2024 International Children’s Day birthday parties around the world!

Cambodia

In Cambodia, more than 1,300 children, their parents and teachers, and local authorities participated in International Children’s Day celebrations across several different provinces.

It was a joyous and meaningful occasion for children in our Cambodia program. Holt Cambodia talked with children about their rights to safety and an education. Then the celebration began with eating traditional porridge, noodles and bread, followed by playing, singing and taking photos.

“All the children and parents were very happy and satisfied with the celebration. This event provided knowledge to their children, and gave the children the chance to play and eat delicious food.” – Holt Cambodia

India

In India, our long-term partner Bharatiya Samaj Seva Kendra (BSSK) celebrated more than 800 children in their four supported orphanages. This was a joyous occasion for children in India to go out for a picnic to the botanical garden and enjoy playing on swing, slide, climbing rope and riding the merry-go-round. For the special meal they enjoyed pizza, egg biryani and their favorite desserts.

“Your generosity has brought immense happiness to the lives of these children, providing them with a memorable experience that they will cherish for years to come.” – BSSK, Holt partner organization in India

Our partner organization in Bangalore, Vathsalya Charitable Trust (VCT), celebrated more than 150 children who attend their early childhood education centers.

The children who attend these centers are part of migrant families who have settled in Bangalore after moving from smaller villages. As part of the International Children’s Day program, children learned about their rights to healthcare, education and protection.

During the celebration, children received an extra special snack — a mix of cashews, almonds, pistachios, walnuts and dates. They also played games, sang songs, danced and did a group painting craft!

Colombia

At FANA, a Holt-supported daycare and preschool program in Bogotá , the theme of this year’s International Children’s Day celebration was gardening. Each class got to learn how to nurture plants to help them grow and thrive. At the end of the day, each child got to take a small succulent plant home with them.

“All the kids had a great time, thank you for your constant support and generosity. These children have the opportunity to enjoy great moments and learn from experiences.” – FANA, Holt partner organization in Colombia

Ethiopia

At this year’s celebration in Ethiopia, children took part in traditional dance and music performances. Next, they had lots of games and ate lots of their favorite foods. Parents, teachers and local authorities all came together for this special event to celebrate children.

There was a performance of traditional acrobatics, and a poetry contest for students in the area.

Thailand

In Thailand, the International Children’s Day celebration coincided with World Emoji Day, so our partner Holt Sahathai Foundation (HSF) organized a fun event for all of the children and their parents – centered around emojis!

“It was a very meaningful time and experience for children and families to learn to stay connected to each other.” – Holt Sahathai Foundation

Children did art projects with emojis, and parents and children learned how to express their feelings to each other.

Every child received a special gift, which made them so happy!

The Philippines

In the Philippines, 160 children at 12 different child caring agencies had amazing birthday celebrations!

They had music performances, played outdoor games and then went inside for the party.

“We are very grateful to Holt International for the support they provided for our children, as it is a big help for us in giving them what they deserve.” – Holt child caring partner in the Philippines

The children enjoyed their all-time favorite foods including burgers, spaghetti, hot dogs, fried chicken, fruit salad and ice cream. Then, each child received a special gift just for them!

Vietnam

Across Vietnam, 206 children living in orphanages enjoyed music performances, went on special outings, and played games for International Children’s Day.

“The care and support from Holt has made a dream of a poor kid come true with a little toy.” — Holt Vietnam

Children enjoyed painting, dancing and charades, and every child received their own book — picture books for the young children, and chapter books for the older children.

China

Children in medical group homes, orphanages, protection centers and elementary and junior high schools participated in International Children’s Day celebrations across China.

It was a meaningful and joyous occasion for children to play tug of war, paint, dance, do charades and perform in talent shows. Then, each child received a special book!
