Holt vice president of programs and services, Thoa Bui, shares how foster care and child sponsorship in Thailand are helping a baby recover from abuse and neglect.
I want to share Danupol’s story with you. He’s in foster care in Thailand, and the nurturing care and attention he has received from his foster mother is helping him recover from the abuse he experienced early in his life…
When Danupol was just a month and a half old, he came to the hospital with a high fever and seizures. Doctors saw that he had previously broken his collarbone and ribs, and determined that he had shaken baby syndrome. They were concerned about his living situation and wanted to be sure he didn’t suffer any more dangerous abuse. So, they reached out to our local partner in Thailand, Holt Sahathai Foundation (HSF), to find him a foster family.
HSF searched carefully for an ideal foster family for Danupol, one that would be safe and caring. He had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a result of his injuries. So, they knew he would require a wide range of medical attention, therapeutic care and emotional support moving forward. They knew he needed an especially loving and nurturing foster family to thrive!
Thankfully, when Danupol was 4 months old, HSF found an experienced and committed family to take care of him. This family has fostered 21 children in the past, and his foster mother is loving, kind and compassionate to Danupol. She takes him to all his medical appointments and does physical therapy exercises with him at home. As a result, Danupol is healthy, developing well and thriving!
Now, just over 2 years old, Danupol is a cheerful, loving and beloved little boy.

She takes him to all his medical appointments and does physical therapy exercises with him at home. As a result, Danupol is healthy, developing well and thriving!
He’s full of life and is a well-tempered and cheerful child! His foster family loves him very much and love playing with him, talking to him and reading him stories. They work with his doctors to stimulate his development, which is improving day by day. He’s learning to feed and bathe himself, and loves to play with his toys. His favorite activity is kicking a football!
