One family in Cambodia struggled to stay warm without safe shelter. But Holt sponsors and donors helped them build a new home!
When our team in Cambodia met 14-year-old Ratanak and his family, they didn’t have safe, warm shelter. They often shivered through the night in winter. And Ratanak’s parents couldn’t afford warm clothes or winter coats for Ratanak and his two siblings.
Ratanak’s father is a skilled tailor but he struggled to find stable work. He briefly got a job in construction, but then lost it due to the pandemic. His mother didn’t work. They had to borrow money from their neighbors just to buy food.

But then they were referred to Holt Cambodia. And through the generosity of Holt sponsors and donors, Ratanak’s mother received start-up funds for a small business selling drinks and snacks at a local school.
The whole family benefited from the additional income that Ratanak’s mother brought in. They could afford to buy warm clothes and they even began to save some extra money. Less than a year later, they were able to build a new home using their savings and generous funds provided through the kind giving of Holt sponsors and donors.
This winter, Ratanak and his family are warm and safe in a new home because of Holt sponsors and donors.
As Ratanak says, “My family members and I get warm during the wintertime since we have a better house and enough warm clothes.”
