Troy has a love for life. His caretakers say he is extroverted and easy to talk to, humble and polite, and he pays attention to others and how they are doing. Someday he hopes that he can have a family of his own, but until then he is making friends at the orphanage.
He was born with spina bifida and had surgery to correct it. He also has strephenopodia of both feet (his feet are turned inward). However, he walks well with orthopedic shoes and even plays basketball with his friends. He enjoys using his creativity, whether that means making arts and crafts, drawing or singing. He even learned how to sing the happy birthday song in English (see video)! He does well in school, and is a quick learner. His teachers like him because he is eager to study and contributes to the class discussions.
Troy is a delight to be around, and is making the most of where he is, but in order to truly thrive, he needs a loving family of his own.
He needs a family that is prepared to parent an older child. As Troy is 12, he has spent most of his childhood in an orphanage in China, which poses some challenges. He needs a family that will be patient with him as he starts learning a new culture, and way of life. He also will need opportunities to sustain his Chinese culture, because that is a huge part of who he is. Troy is going to need a compassionate and safe place to work through any trauma, sadness or anger that he may have from difficult past experiences. He needs a family that is willing to meet him where he is, will give him the support he needs and can help make the transition to a new home as smooth as possible.
Troy needs a family that has access to medical care. He is still growing so he will need new orthopedic shoes. He will also need a school, sports teams and community that will be inclusive of him and allow him to participate in his favorite activities. He will need to feel supported and encouraged to try things in spite of his special needs.
Most of all, Troy needs a family that is willing. Willing to take the challenges as they come, willing to come alongside of Troy and help him pursue his goals and dreams, and willing to allow him to change their life for the better.
